To trash or not to trash....

Hello friends and fans! Thanks for sticking with us and checking out the new blog entry. Today, I plan on tackling the topic of "trash the dress." Many many clients ask me what it is and there are several ways to explain it. Check out the following:

1. Wikipedia says the following:

"Trash the dress", also known as "fearless bridal" or "rock the frock", is a style of wedding photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is out of place. It is generally shot in the style of fashion or glamour photography. Such photography often takes place on a beach, but other locations include city streets, rooftops, garbage dumps, fields, and abandoned buildings. The woman often wears a ball gown, prom dress or wedding dress, and may effectively ruin the dress in the process by getting it wet, dirty, or, in extreme circumstances, tearing or destroying the garment.

Some sources claim that the trend was originally started in 2001 by Las Vegas wedding photographer John Michael Cooper,[1] however, the idea of destroying a wedding dress has been used in Hollywood symbolically since at least October 1998 when Meg Cummings of the show Sunset Beach ran into the ocean in her wedding dress after her wedding was interrupted.

On 26 August 2012, during a photo shoot at the Ouareau River in Rawdon, Quebec, Canada, Maria Pantazopoulos, a 30-year-old Montreal bride drowned[2] when the dress she was wearing dragged her downstream. The photographer, as well as others, tried to help but were unable to rescue her. Her body was later recovered by a scuba diver.[3]"

2. Urban Dictionary says the following: "trash the dress" isn't defined. Want to go and define it for them? Give it a shot.

3. I say the following: Trash the Dress is about fun and beauty! You get to wear that dress again - you know, the one that you took weeks to pick out, spent countless hours and sessions in fittings, had steamed, wore of the potentially best day of your life, and then maybe had preserved.... or maybe you are like me and its hanging up in the back of a closet somewhere, unwashed, and praying for better days. Let's be real. YOU INVESTED in that dress. Why not get one more use and some MEMORIES out of it! This being said, here are some really cool inspirations and trash the dress ideas for photo sessions for my future TTD clients.

  • Finger-paint in it with your kids
  • Take it for a spin on a fun 5K (Color Vibe, Color Run, Run or Dye, pretty much any race that will allow you to potentially be wearing a ballgown....)
  • Clean it up and take it for a spin on your anniversary and surprise your spouse!
  • Go to the beach in it
  • Go shopping in it
  • Go bar hopping in it
  • Run through a field of flowers in it (now that you aren't going to be worrie about all of the pollen stains!)
  • Hang out in NYC wearing it
  • Wear it at the top of a mountain
  • Play at a playground in it
The options are really endless. The only limitation is your creativity!
